世界遺産に登録されている、イスタンブールの地下貯水槽、バシリカ・シスタンを写した絵葉書。
地下宮殿（ちかきゅうでん）の通称で知られるバシリカ・シスタン (Basilica Cistern) は、トルコ共和国のイスタンブールにある東ローマ帝国の大貯水槽。トルコ語では「地下宮殿」を意味するイェレバタン・サラユ (Yerebatan Sarayı) 、あるいは「地下貯水池」を意味するイェレバタン・サルヌジュ (Yerebatan Sarnıcı) という名前で呼ばれている。
現存する東ローマ帝国の貯水池としては最大のものである。現在は一般にも公開され、イスタンブール歴史地域として世界遺産にも登録されている。

この貯水池は、ジェームズ・ボンドの映画『007 ロシアより愛をこめて』の撮影場所として使われた。その後、補修作業を行った後に1980年から一般公開された。

見出しに書かれている「Citerne de Yéré-Batan」だが、citerne=フランス語で貯水槽、yéréはトルコ語で地に、batanは沈んだという意味なので、「地下貯水槽」と訳すことが出来る。

現在のバシリカ・シスタンは改修工事を行い、美しくライトアップされた姿で一般公開されているが、この写真は改修以前に撮られたものだと思われる。
バシリカ・シスタンの昔の姿を見られるという意味では、貴重な一枚かもしれない。

The Basilica Cistern (Turkish: Yerebatan Sarnıcı – “Cistern Sinking Into Ground”), is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns that lie beneath the city of Istanbul (formerly Constantinople), Turkey. The cistern, located 500 feet (150 m) southwest of the Hagia Sophia on the historical peninsula of Sarayburnu, was built in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I.
