伏見桃山御陵
明治天皇の御陵で、三段からなる上円下方の御塚はさざれ石を円く高く積み上げ、その高さは21尺、御拝所よりの総高さ66尺と拝される。
1912年（明治45年）7月30日、明治天皇は東京の宮城・明治宮殿で崩御した。同年（大正元年）9月13日に東京・青山の帝國陸軍練兵場（現在の神宮外苑）にて大喪儀が執り行なわれた後、翌9月14日に埋葬された。

上円下方墳（じょうえんかほうふん）とは日本列島でかつて築造された古墳の一類型、及び近代に築造された皇室の陵墓の一形式である。
この形式の古墳は二段になっており、下段が方形、上段が円形となっている。極めて稀な形態であり、これまでに6例しか確認されていない。

His personal name, which is not used in any formal or official context, except for his signature, was Mutsuhito (睦仁).

The shrine does not contain the Emperor’s grave, which is located at Fushimi-momoyama south of Kyoto.
